Surreal Vision of Cambridge

Cambridge Fantastic is a series of original paintings created by local artist – Radek Walachnia. The series is showing the beautiful town of Cambridge, UK and surrounding areas in a new, whimsical way. The artist is trying to convey an idea of the city free of pollution and traffic jams, where people can use all the vertical space to walk, cycle, use rowboats gliding through clouds, air-punt and in general enjoy their lives literally on all available levels.

I’m really happy I have an opportunity to share my vision with you and I hope you’ll enjoy those semi-fantastical illustrations as much as I enjoyed creating them.

I’d like to think that being an architect and also having years of experience in the video game industry gave me a unique ability to mix in my art real world elements with more imaginative ingredients resulting in a magical and surrealistic view of Cambridge.

All watercolour paintings are based on meticulous research. I’m trying to paint correct architecture but at the same time leave some space for the viewer’s imagination to roam free.

If you look hard enough you may find some famous characters hidden within my art. There are some Monty Python iconic characters there, Sir Isaac Newton accompanied by Charles Darwin, late Stephen Hawking or even members of Pink Floyd performing on (or above) the streets of Cambridge.

‘Store Fronts’ Collection

This series is based on beautiful Cambridge buildings, it also focuses on small businesses that occupy them. I’m portraying local cafes, restaurants, boutiques and shops that every Cambridge resident recognise with ease. By adding people I’m creating small stories within paintings. If you look closely maybe you can recognise owner of the café, or some famous characters there?
Enjoy this unique journey through the paintings.

‘Narrow Boats’ Collection

This popular series is concentrating on Britain’s famous narrow boats. I’m incorporating them into Cambridge landscape as if they righteously belong there. Of course being part of Cambridge Fantastic series those boats are a bit special. Floating over Cambridge city and University buildings they defy gravity laws but at the same time bring dream like fantasy to mostly traditional environments. Let me take you on a boat cruise…

‘Buildings’ Collection

Inspired by historical architecture of Cambridge – buildings in this series are both secular and religious, small and large, tall and short, straight and wonky, famous ones and lesser known – but always beautiful and full of character. Amongst those buildings roam visitors and Cambridge residents, enjoying their virtual life.
All of that is sprinkled here with ‘Cambridge Fantastic Fairy Dust’ to create mix of real and magical.

‘Festive’ Collection

Some of my most popular paintings get here a ‘festive’ treatment. It requires creating even more magical mood than usual. Recipe is straight forward: warm, cosy lights, cover of snow, accidental Santa Claus going about his business, and the painting is ready for your enjoyment.
